Story
The European Commission's enforcement powers under the EU AI Act (Regulation 2024/1689) for General-Purpose AI (GPAI) model providers activate on August 2, 2026. From this date, the Commission gains exclusive supervision powers over GPAI model providers, with the ability to impose fines up to €15 million or 3% of annual worldwide turnover for non-compliance. GPAI model obligations originally took effect on August 2, 2025, but penalty enforcement was postponed for one year to allow industry time to comply. The enforcement framework covers documentation requirements, cooperation obligations, risk mitigation measures (with additional requirements for systemic risk models), and adversarial testing. A scientific panel will support compliance monitoring, and providers can demonstrate compliance through codes of practice and harmonized standards. Data Protection Law Hub reported the core details. Steptoe noted additional context. Matproof added corroborating details.
