Story
The EU AI Act, which entered into force on August 1, 2024, reaches a critical enforcement milestone on August 2, 2026. From that date, the European Commission's AI Office gains full supervision and enforcement powers over providers of General Purpose AI (GPAI) models, as established under Regulation (EU) 2024/1689. While GPAI model providers have been subject to transparency and compliance obligations since August 2, 2025—including reporting incidents and registering with the EU database—the Commission's direct enforcement authority, covering information requests, model recalls, and mandatory corrective measures, only activates on August 2, 2026. Providers of systemic-risk GPAI models are also expected to proactively engage with the AI Office by this date. Additionally, all EU member states must establish at least one national AI regulatory sandbox by August 2, 2026, under Article 57 of the AI Act.
