Story
The EU AI Act enters its full enforcement phase on August 2, 2026, marking a critical milestone for general-purpose AI (GPAI) model providers. On this date, the European Commission's AI Office gains full supervision and enforcement powers under Regulation 2024/1689, including the authority to issue binding information requests to GPAI providers and impose fines of up to 3% of global annual turnover or €15 million (whichever is higher) under Article 101. While GPAI model obligations have applied since August 2, 2025, the enforcement teeth become fully effective now, requiring companies serving the EU's 450 million users to ensure compliance or face significant penalties. This deadline affects all GPAI model providers globally who place products on the EU market. Artificial Intelligence Act (Official) reported the core details. Reg Intel noted additional context.
