Story
The EU AI Act enters its final enforcement phase on August 2, 2026, when the European Commission's full supervisory powers over General-Purpose AI (GPAI) model providers become effective under Regulation 2024/1689. From this date, the AI Office gains authority to request information, conduct inspections, order model recalls, and impose fines of up to €15 million or 3% of global annual turnover for non-compliance. Providers of systemic-risk GPAI models must proactively report to the AI Office and comply with transparency, documentation, and copyright obligations under Article 53. The enforcement framework represents a landmark moment in global AI governance, establishing the EU as the first major jurisdiction to impose direct regulatory supervision on advanced AI model developers.
