Story
The EU AI Act's obligations for providers of general-purpose AI models become fully enforceable on August 2, 2026. Providers of systemic-risk GPAI models must proactively report to and engage with the AI Office. While obligations technically kicked in on August 2, 2025, the AI Office does not have full enforcement powers until August 2, 2026. By this date, the Commission may request information, order model recalls, and mandate compliance measures. Providers of the most advanced models that pose systemic risks are legally obliged to notify the AI Office of these models. The AI Office supports providers in their compliance, especially Code of Practice signatories. Failure to comply can result in administrative fines of up to €35 million or 7% of global annual turnover, as well as civil and criminal liability depending on jurisdiction. Providers of GPAI models placed on the market before August 2, 2024 have until August 2, 2027 to achieve compliance. European Commission Digital Strategy reported the core details. EU Artificial Intelligence Act noted additional context. MediaLaws added corroborating details.
