Story
The EU AI Act introduces comprehensive obligations for general-purpose AI (GPAI) model providers under Regulation 2024/1689. GPAI model provider obligations entered into application on August 2, 2025, with full enforcement beginning August 2, 2026. Providers of major GPAI models such as GPT-4, Claude, and Gemini must comply with the GPAI Code of Practice, which establishes technical documentation requirements, transparency obligations, and information-sharing requirements for downstream providers. The European Commission has issued guidelines clarifying the scope of these obligations. Providers must provide sufficient information to enable downstream providers to comply with their own AI Act obligations, including documentation on model capabilities, limitations, and integration requirements. Non-compliance can result in significant administrative fines and penalties. European Commission Digital Strategy reported the core details. Houthoff noted additional context.
