The EU AI Act's obligations for general-purpose AI (GPAI) model providers enter enforcement phase on August 2, 2026. Under Regulation 2024/1689, the European Commission will gain enforcement powers including the authority to impose fines up to €15 million or 3% of global turnover for GPAI-specific violations (Article 101), with broader penalties up to €35 million or 7% of turnover for general AI Act breaches (Article 99). Providers of GPAI models placed on the market after August 2, 2025 must comply by August 2, 2026, while providers of models already on the market before August 2, 2025 have until August 2, 2027 to achieve compliance. The enforcement timeline marks a critical milestone for major AI model providers including OpenAI, Google, Anthropic, Meta, and Mistral.
