Story

On August 2, 2026, the European Commission's enforcement powers against general-purpose AI (GPAI) model providers will become fully effective under the EU AI Act. While GPAI model provider obligations (Chapter V) took effect on August 2, 2025, providers received a one-year adjustment period before Commission supervision and enforcement could begin. The Commission's powers include requesting documentation and information, conducting evaluations, requesting compliance measures, market restrictions, model recalls, and imposing fines. Providers of systemic-risk GPAI models must proactively report to the AI Office. National market surveillance authorities may request the Commission to exercise enforcement powers, downstream providers can lodge complaints, and the scientific panel can alert the AI Office to risks. EU Artificial Intelligence Act reported the core details. European Commission Digital Strategy noted additional context. ADVISORI added corroborating details.
