Story
The European Commission's enforcement powers under the EU AI Act for providers of general-purpose AI (GPAI) models will take effect on August 2, 2026. While GPAI model provider obligations (Chapter V) became applicable on August 2, 2025, providers were granted a one-year adjustment period before Commission supervision and enforcement could begin. The Commission's enforcement powers include the authority to request documentation and information, conduct evaluations, require compliance measures, risk mitigation, market restrictions, product recalls/withdrawals, and impose fines. Providers of GPAI models placed on the market before August 2, 2025 must comply by August 2, 2027. National market surveillance authorities, downstream providers, and the scientific panel all play roles in enforcement by alerting the AI Office to systemic or identifiable risks.
