Story
The EU AI Act's full enforcement powers over general-purpose AI (GPAI) model providers take effect on August 2, 2026. While GPAI model obligations have been in force since August 2, 2025—including transparency, copyright, and safety requirements—the European Commission's supervision and enforcement powers against GPAI model providers activate on August 2, 2026. The AI Office will gain authority to investigate non-compliance, request information, order model recalls, and impose fines up to 3% of global annual turnover or €15 million (whichever is higher) under Article 101 of the EU AI Act. Providers of systemic-risk GPAI models face additional obligations, including proactive notification to the AI Office and engagement on safety and security matters. The finalized GPAI Code of Practice serves as a voluntary compliance tool submitted by independent experts. EU Artificial Intelligence Act reported the core details. European Commission Digital Strategy noted additional context. Latham & Watkins added corroborating details.
