Story

As of 2 August 2025, the EU AI Act's rules for General Purpose AI (GPAI) models became applicable for new models placed on the market after that date. GPAI model providers must comply with obligations including technical documentation, copyright compliance for training data, and the EU GPAI Code of Practice. From 2 August 2026, the European Commission's formal enforcement powers enter into application, with the Commission able to investigate providers and impose fines of up to €15 million or 3% of global annual turnover for GPAI-specific violations (Article 101), and up to €35 million or 7% for broader AI Act breaches (Article 99). Providers of GPAI models already on the market before 2 August 2025 have until 2 August 2027 to bring their models and documentation into compliance. Tech firms have expressed concerns about the tight August 2, 2026 deadline as enforcement becomes active. European Commission Digital Strategy reported the core details. Houthoff noted additional context. Medialaws added corroborating details.
