Story
The EU AI Act enforcement timeline reaches a critical milestone on August 2, 2026, when the European Commission's enforcement powers for General-Purpose AI (GPAI) model providers become fully applicable under Regulation 2024/1689. From this date, the Commission can enforce compliance with GPAI obligations, including issuing fines and requiring model recalls. Providers of GPAI models placed on the market after August 2, 2025 must already comply with obligations such as technical documentation, transparency, and systemic risk notifications. The most advanced models posing systemic risks are legally required to notify the AI Office. The guidelines clarify that only providers making significant modifications to AI models need to comply, with exemptions for open-source models under certain conditions. Providers of GPAI models placed on the market before August 2, 2025 have until August 2, 2027 to achieve full compliance. European Commission Digital Strategy reported the core details.
