Story
August 2, 2026 represents the critical enforcement deadline under the EU AI Act (Regulation 2024/1689) when the European Commission and AI Office will gain full enforcement powers specific to General-Purpose AI (GPAI) model providers. While GPAI model obligations under Article 53 became applicable in August 2025—including requirements for technical documentation, training data summaries, and copyright compliance—the actual enforcement mechanisms and fine capabilities do not begin until August 2, 2026. This date also activates Article 50 transparency obligations for limited-risk AI systems and high-risk system rules. Non-EU GPAI model providers mustappoint an authorized representative in the Union before placing their models on the EU market. Providers of GPAI models released under free and open-source licenses may be exempt from certain obligations under specific conditions. European Commission Digital Strategy reported the core details. EU Artificial Intelligence Act noted additional context. DLA Piper added corroborating details.
