The EU AI Act enforcement powers against General-Purpose AI (GPAI) model providers become fully effective on August 2, 2026, marking a critical milestone under Regulation 2024/1689. While GPAI providers have been subject to obligations since August 2, 2025, the European Commission's supervision and enforcement powers only activate on this date. Under Article 101 of the AI Act, non-compliant GPAI providers face administrative fines of up to EUR 15 million or 3% of their annual global turnover, whichever is higher. The AI Office will have authority to request information, order model recalls, and mandate structural changes for systemic-risk GPAI models. European Commission Digital Strategy reported the core details. EU Artificial Intelligence Act noted additional context. EU Artificial Intelligence Act added corroborating details.
