Story

The EU AI Act's enforcement powers for general-purpose AI (GPAI) model providers under Regulation 2024/1689 become fully applicable on August 2, 2026. From this date, the European Commission's AI Office will have authority to enforce compliance with GPAI model provider obligations, including the power to request information, order model recalls, mandate mitigation measures, and impose fines. The enforcement deadline marks a critical milestone in the EU's regulatory approach to AI, as providers of GPAI models placed on the market after August 2, 2025 must already comply, while those with models on the market before that date have until August 2, 2027 to achieve full compliance. European Commission Digital Strategy reported the core details. Latham & Watkins noted additional context. Houthoff added corroborating details.
