Story
The EU AI Act's enforcement powers for general-purpose AI (GPAI) model providers under Regulation 2024/1689 become fully effective on August 2, 2026. Under this regulation, providers of GPAI models placed on the market before this date must ensure compliance by August 2, 2027 according to Article 5(c). The AI Act establishes a risk-based approach with four risk categories: unacceptable risk (banned practices), high-risk, limited risk, and minimal or no risk. High-risk AI systems will be subject to strict obligations including risk assessment, data quality requirements, logging, documentation, human oversight, and cybersecurity measures. The European Commission has published guidelines on prohibited AI practices and AI system definitions to facilitate compliance. European Commission Digital Strategy reported the core details. EU Artificial Intelligence Act Implementation Timeline noted additional context. AI Act Service Desk added corroborating details.
