Story
The EU AI Act's August 2, 2026 compliance deadline for high-risk AI systems is approaching, requiring U.S. companies that serve EU customers to comply with stringent regulatory obligations. The regulation applies to operators of high-risk AI systems including biometric identification, critical infrastructure, education, employment, access to essential services, law enforcement, migration and administration of justice. However, European Parliament has voted to delay the deadline to December 2027, with a further extension to August 2028 for sector-specific obligations. A political agreement in the Council of the European Union is required before June 2026 for the delay to take effect, creating significant uncertainty for businesses. The EU AI Act follows an extraterritorial jurisdictional model similar to GDPR, applying to non-EU companies whose AI systems are placed on the EU market or whose output affects EU residents.
