Story

The EU AI Act (Regulation (EU) 2024/1689) enters a critical enforcement phase on August 2, 2026, when the European Commission's enforcement powers become applicable to providers of general-purpose AI (GPAI) models. From this date, the Commission will enforce compliance with GPAI model obligations, including the ability to impose fines. GPAI model providers must comply with requirements including technical documentation, transparency obligations, and cooperation with authorities. The compliance deadline applies to GPAI models placed on the market before August 2, 2025, with full compliance required by August 2, 2027 for models placed on the market between August 2, 2025 and August 2, 2027. The EU AI Act uses a phased implementation timeline spanning from August 2024 to August 2027, with high-risk AI requirements and all financial penalties taking effect from August 2, 2026. European Commission Digital Strategy reported the core details. EU AI Act Service Desk noted additional context. GLACIS added corroborating details.
