The EU AI Act (Regulation 2024/1689) enters a critical phase on August 2, 2026, when the European Commission's enforcement powers for general-purpose AI (GPAI) model providers become fully applicable. From this date, the Commission will have authority to enforce compliance with GPAI obligations including transparency requirements, technical documentation, and copyright training data disclosures. Providers of GPAI models placed on the market before August 2, 2025 have until August 2, 2027 to comply. Penalties for non-compliance can reach up to 3% of annual worldwide turnover or €15 million, whichever is higher. The enforcement applies extraterritorially to companies outside the EU whose AI system outputs are used within the Union. European Commission Digital Strategy reported the core details. Skadden Arps Slate Meagher & Flom noted additional context. Stephenson Harwood added corroborating details.
